Rochester Climate March Rallies Community to Take Climate Action for Second Consecutive Year
For Immediate Release
ROCHESTER, NY - September 24, 2024 - This Friday, September 27, 2024, local residents, activists, and organizations will unite once again to demand bold climate action and a transition away from fossil fuels. For the second consecutive year, the Rochester Climate March will mobilize the community, starting at 4:00 p.m. at Washington Square Park (10 Saint Marys Place, Rochester, NY, 14607). The event is free and open to all.
“I'm excited for this opportunity to bring people together and connect on an issue that matters so deeply to so many people,” said Elena Perez, University of Rochester student organizer.
The march’s theme focuses on mobilizing local residents to engage in climate action that organizations in the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region are taking. Participants will stop at key locations in downtown Rochester before returning to Washington Square Park for a climate action resource fair to connect with local organizations, which will run until 7:00 p.m.
“Achieving the ambitious and absolutely necessary goals of the NYS Climate Act is possible but it will require society to replace destructive systems with healthier, restorative ones,” said Susan Hughes-Smith, Monroe County Legislator. People must continually press our elected officials for the necessary policies and investments. I am grateful to the community organizations for leading the climate march.”
This event is a collaboration between the Sunrise Movement, Rochester Youth Climate Leaders, Students for a Democratic Society at University of Rochester, Extinction Rebellion Rochester, Third Act Upstate NY, Rochester Area Interfaith Climate Action, Climate Reality Finger Lakes, Citizens' Climate Lobby Rochester, the Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, and other climate-concerned organizations and individuals.
