City of Canandaigua Launches First-of-its-kind Community Campaign to Promote Clean Heating Technology

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canandaigua, NY (September 18, 2024) - The Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region is proud to announce that the City of Canandaigua has been approved for a first-of-its-kind Community Campaign, in partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Finger Lakes Regional Clean Energy Hub (AMPED). The goal of this campaign is to encourage homeowners, renters, landlords, and small businesses to switch to clean heating and cooling technologies, such as air source and geothermal heat pumps, by taking advantage of state and federal funding initiatives.

The partnership between the City of Canandaigua and AMPED was spurred due to the record flooding that occurred in Canandaigua last July. The flooding led to numerous displacements and damage to dozens of HVAC systems for Canandaigua families. During the recovery from flood damage, air source heat pumps were considered as a mitigation option because their mechanical components are installed above flood levels. AMPED staff connected Canandaigua homeowners to grants for new HVAC systems, and worked with the City to promote clean energy adoption.

The Community Campaign is intended to increase consumer awareness of and education on clean energy technologies, reduce installed costs, and jump start clean energy technology markets in Canandaigua (both Town and City) and its surrounding areas. The campaign launch also arrives in the midst of record federal funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, where both low-income, and soon, market-rate families can take advantage of an additional $14,000 in funding for home electrification.

“The Climate Solutions Accelerator is excited to launch the first Clean Energy Hub Community Campaign in Canandaigua and its surrounding areas,” said Jenna Lawson, the Accelerator’s Clean Energy Hub Director. “This partnership with the city’s government will help ensure local residents can take advantage of clean, energy efficient technologies and incentives. We look forward to building on our relationships within the community as a trusted guide to help families and businesses transition to a clean energy future.”

The campaign is funded by New York State, with no cost to the City of Canandaigua, and is the first to be approved state-wide. This initiative is complementary to the City of Canadaigua’s position as a Regional Leader in the Clean Energy Communities program and certification as a Silver-level Climate Smart Community. To date, these actions have brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars of grant funding for the City to implement municipal sustainability projects.

"The City of Canandaigua is proud to be in a leadership role with respect to the utilization of alternative energy sources and energy efficiency,” said John Goodwin, City Manager. “This program will continue efforts to help residents of Canandaigua understand how they can improve energy efficiency in their own home and the many state and federal incentives to help them do so.”

To access these incentives and learn more about the opportunities available, schedule a call with an Energy Advisor at http://ampedproject.org/book or call 585-419-6218. To learn more about the campaign, join AMPED staff and volunteers at the first annual Discover Canandaigua in Downtown Canandaigua on September 28th from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
