FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROCHESTER, NY (September 13, 2023) - On Friday, September 15, climate-concerned individuals and organizations will march in solidarity with global mobilizations organized by Fridays for Future to demand an end to the era of fossil fuels. The march will start at 3:00 PM on Church Street in front of Rochester City Hall (30 Church St, Rochester, NY 14614) and is open to the public.

This event is a collaboration between the Sunrise Movement, Rochester Youth Climate Leaders, the Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, and other climate-concerned organizations and individuals.

“Climate change is a threat to everybody on Earth, yet so often misunderstood and overlooked. I’m hoping that these marches will encourage people to take action,” said Lucille McLaren, march organizer, and Harley School student

The theme of this event is to mobilize local residents to engage in climate action that organizations in the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region are taking. Speakers from local organizations will present on the importance of climate action from 3:00 PM until 3:30 PM when the march begins. The march will include a ten-minute stop at the Monroe County Office Building before concluding at Washington Square Park for speakers and a tabling fair.

Speakers will include:

  • Juliet Besch-Turner and Dorothy Nettle, Rochester Youth Climate Leaders

  • Jahasia Esgdaille, Reconnect Rochester

  • Luis Torres, Vice President of Metro Justice's Council

  • Mary Lupien, Vice President of Rochester City Council

  • Thomas Hirasuna, Climate Reality Project

“We will never get a just energy transition that prioritizes local savings and jobs and includes everyone, with RG&E. For that, we need a public utility. Metro Justice is marching to end fossil fuels and corporate monopolies that are sucking our communities dry, and calling on the County Executive and Legislature to take action to study an alternative to RG&E,” elaborated Luis Torres, Vice President of Metro Justice's Council.
